Carer ServicesCarer Services are provided by Mental Health Carers NT to support families, carers and friends of people with a mental illness from our two offices located in Darwin and Alice Springs. Cope with the realisation that someone you know has a mental illnessSeek appropriate helpDiscover your rights under the Mental Health Act and the Carer Recognition ActEducate yourself about mental illness and how to cope Services include:Support Appointments are available with a support worker, home visits can also be arranged. Carers in the NT wholive outside of Darwin or Alice Springs can have telephone contact with staff or have resources postedto them. Support Groups Small, mutual support groups meet on a regular basis so that relatives and friends can share experiences andinformation with others who understand just what their lives are like. Carers are emotionally supported, encouraged and introduced to new ways of coping. In addition, special meetings can be held on topics of interest and guest speakers invited to attend where it is appropriate. DarwinA small group of carers meet for a 'working bee' to produce the newsletter. Call the office on 8948 1051 for times. Alice Springs The Alice Springs Support Group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 10.30am at the Alice Springs office and on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 5.30pm at the Carers NT office. Education The WellWays Family Education Program can help you to learn more about mental illness and learn effective caring strategies. Library Mental Health Carers NT provides up to date information about mental illnesses and disorders for carers throughits library. We have a collection of books and articles which are available for loan. We also stock the Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia Fact Sheet series. Call the support worker regarding the best time to peruse the selection from our library. Referral The support workers can provide you with information about other services available to you and the person you are caring for and help to connect you with these services. Advocacy Mental Health Carers NT can help you to find your way around the NT mental health system, know your rights,assist you to learn how to collaborate with health professionals and advocate for you to ensure the person you are caring for gets the best possible treatment. Newsletter Our newsletter helps keep people in touch and informed about new policies and services, shares news about the activities of the organisation as well as information about the latest developmentsin the field of mentalillness. It is published every two months and distributed widely throughout the NT.To be included on the mailing list simply provide us with a mailing address.
